Neap Tide portrays the contrasting 20s and 30s with a dual setting of the Awhitu valley and Auckland. It commences with the arrival in the valley of identical twins Alice and Eileen - their different characters immediately apparent. Other than feminine fashions and dances rural life is almost unchanged. In the city Emily expands her empire, luring family into hotel managment and textiles, despite continued oppostion from her brother and other businessmen. Cabarets and theatre highlight nightlife. The depression holds mixed fortunes for the family.
